Bayer Leverkusen sign Victor Boniface in record deal

  • Bayer Leverkusen have made a significant addition to their squad by securing the services of Nigerian forward Victor Boniface from Union Saint-Gilloise.
  • Leverkusen officially announced the exciting news on their social media platforms.
  • According to the announcement, Boniface has signed a lengthy five-year contract, which will see him don the club's colours until 2028.

While specific financial details of the deal are yet to be disclosed by Leverkusen, sources suggest that Union SG agreed to the transfer for a guaranteed fee of €20 million, along with €7.5 million in add-ons and various clauses. Additionally, the agreement includes a 15% sell-on clause.

This landmark deal sets a new record for Union SG as the most expensive sale in their history, easily surpassing the €7 million they received from Club Brugge in exchange for Casper Nielsen just last year.

Remarkably, less than a year ago, Union SG acquired Boniface from Bodo/Glimt for a fee of €2 million. Now, the Belgian club stands to make a tenfold profit from the sale.

Boniface's rise to prominence has been remarkable, largely due to his crucial goal-scoring exploits for USG in the Belgian Pro League, which helped propel the team to a commendable second-place finish in the recent season.

Moreover, the 22-year-old forward etched his name in history by bagging an astonishing six goals in the Europa League, earning him the prestigious top goalscorer award. This accomplishment marks him as the first Nigerian player to achieve such an accolade in the competition's history.

With this high-profile signing, Victor Boniface joins the ranks of Bayer Leverkusen's first team, becoming only the second Nigerian player to do so, following in the footsteps of Karibe Ojigwe.
