Cameroon vs Nigeria: History, Preview and Prediction

Toyosi Afolayan

In the race for a spot in the semifinals of the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria will play Cameroon on Thursday, at the Stade Mohammed V.

One of the Super Falcons or the Indomitable Lionesses will advance to the semifinals of WAFCON 2022 and secure a spot at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup if they win in Casablanca, Morocco, on Thursday.

However, participation in the inter-confederation playoffs in February in Australia and New Zealand will serve as a possible consolation prize and a backdoor to the World Cup for the team that loses tomorrow.

MATCH PREVIEW

The Super Falcons are the highest scoring team in this year's tournament with seven goals, despite losing their opening game 2-1 to South Africa.

The nine-time African champions trounced Burundi 4-0 on Sunday after defeating Botswana 2-0 on matchday two.

Similar to Nigeria, Cameroon finished second in their group. However, the Indomitable Lionesses are undefeated, having won one and drawn two games in the group phase.

The Lionesses held Zambia to a scoreless draw, drew 1-1 with Togo, and then defeated Tunisia 2-0 to set up this encounter.

The Cameroonians may be in the finest condition to face their enduring foe thanks to a tight defence that allowed just a single goal in three matches.

HISTORY

With nine titles in her cabinet, Nigeria is the most successful team in Women's Africa Cup of Nations history.

Three of Nigeria's titles have been at the expense of the Cameroonian team.

Nigeria defeated the Lionesses in the tournament's final at the 2004, 2014, and 2016 editions.

The Cameroonians are an African powerhouse also and they are one of the three teams that has defeated the Super Falcons (in 2012) in the last 16 years on African soil.

However, the last time they faced off was in the semifinal of the 2018 edition. Penalties were required to separate the two sides, with Nigeria coming out on top.

PREDICTION

Nigeria would be the slight favourites to defeat the Indomitable Lionesses because of their unparalleled history and fierce onslaught.

However, the Cameroonians are tenacious combatants who will compete with the Falcons with everything they have. A little goalscoring victory will end this.

Cameroon 0 – 2 Nigeria is our prediction for the encounter.
