- Kelechi John Christian joins Central Cost Mariners
- The 23-year old has been a free agent since July 1st
- He last played for Casa Pia AC in the Portuguese 2nd division
Nigerian International, Kelechi Christian has joined Australian A-League outfit, Central Coast Mariners on a free transfer.
The 23-year-old joins the Gosford based outfit following the expiration of his contract with Portuguese Primera Liga side, Casa Pia. In a bid to recruit the former Nigerian youth international, Central Coast Mariners had to outbid top-tier clubs in Portugal.
After beginning his career in the Nigerian Professional Football League, Kelechi spent the majority of his time playing football in Portugal.
Nick Montgomery, head coach of the Coasties was pleased to secure the defender’s signature saying, “Kelechi is a fast, powerful central defender who we tracked for a while through our scouting network and knowledge of the Portuguese league. Whilst he had offers from other clubs in Portugal and across Europe, we were able to convince him to join the Mariners.”
“He has big ambitions and we hope to help him develop into a top player who can reach his potential. While still young, he will bring great experience to the squad as well as competition for places in defence.”
On Saturday, October 8th, the Central Coast Mariners face the Newcastle Jets at home to open the 2022–23 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
