Nigerian Team of the Week Oct 27-30, 2023

  • Jonathan Rasheed is in goal for the first time ever
  • Calvin Bassey impresses in defence
  • Alex Iwobi runs the midfield
  • Akor Adams stars in attack
  • Here's the Nigerian Team of the Week

GK - JONATHAN RASHEED - IFK VARNAMO

The 31-year-old goalkeeper made six saves, providing the solid platform for IFK Varnamo to power to a [1-3] away win against Kalmar FF in the Swedish Allsvenskan.

CB - CALVIN BASSEY - FULHAM FC

Bassey banished his below-par showing against Tottenham with a fine display, including six tackles made, six duels won, and two interceptions made, for Fulham in their fine [1-1] English Premier League draw with Brighton.

CB - IZUCHUKWU ANTHONY - FK RADNICKI

Izuchukwu Anthony made six tackles and added an assist to help FK Radnicki soar to a dominant [4-1] victory over Mladost Lucani in the Serbian Superliga.

CB - KENNETH OMERUO - KASIMPASA S.K.

Kenneth Omeruo contributed two tackles, two interceptions, two key blocks and six clearances including one goal-line clearnace as Kasimpasa enjoyed a fantastic [3-1] triumph over Istanbulspor in the Turkish Superlig.

LM - SAMUEL KALU - FC LAUSANNE-SPORT

Samuel Kalu was at his exciting best as his fleet foot produced three dribbles, two shots on target, and one chance created as ten-man FC Lausanne-Sport claimed a [3-0] Swiss Super League win over Basel.

MF - FISAYO DELE-BASHIRU - HATAYSPOR

Hatayspor fell to a disappointing [1-2] Turkish Superlig defeat to Kayserispor, but it was not for lack of effort from Dele-Bashiru, who completed three dribbles and created three chances that were not converted.

MF - ALEX IWOBI - FULHAM FC

While Bassey was solid in defence, Iwobi was mercurial in midfield for Fulham, with the former Arsenal playmaker's creativity and resilience highlighted by his five successful dribbles and six won duels in their [1-1] draw against Brighton.

RM - PHILIP AZANGO - FC SPARTAK TRNAVA

Azango was AS Trencin's biggest nightmare on Sunday, as his two goals and one assist were all Spartak Trnava needed to edge to a [2-3] Slovakian Nike Liga victory over their hosts.

ST - ABRAHAM MARCUS - FC PORTO B

Vilaverdense had no antidote to Abraham Marcus' intelligent runs and fine finishes as the former Remo Stars player scored two of FC Porto B's goals in their [0-5] Liga Portugal 2 away win.

ST - AKOR ADAMS - MONTPELLIER HSC - STAR OF THE WEEK

The French Ligue 1's second highest goalscorer, Akor Adams delivered another masterclass in close-control and expert finishing as he scored twice in Montpellier's [3-0] win over Toulouse.

The 23-year-old becomes the first player in the club's history to score seven goals in the first nine games of the season and is undoubtedly our Nigerian Star of the Week.

ST - PHILIP OTELE - CFR CLUJ

Philip Otele was one of the star performers, as he assisted CFR Cluj's winning goals in the [3-1] comeback victory against FCV Farul Constanţa in the Romanian Superliga.
