Nigeria's Super Eagles claim revenge with 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau
Raba
- The Super Eagles redeemed themselves with a 1-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, regaining their spot at the top of Group A.
Guinea-Bissau had stunned Nigeria with a home victory in the previous fixture, but the Super Eagles started the match in control, creating chances early on.
The only goal of the match came from a penalty, with Moses Simon converting after Bright Osayi-Samuel won the spot-kick by drawing a foul.
Nigeria missed further opportunities to extend their lead before half-time and throughout the second half. Victor Osimhen was particularly dangerous in the opposition's penalty box, but his shots were either off-target or struck the woodwork.
Despite the narrow scoreline, the Super Eagles secured an important victory that moved them to the top of Group A with nine points from four games.
Guinea-Bissau now sit in second place, trailing Nigeria by two points, while Sierra Leone is four points behind after a 2-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe.
Nigeria's next fixtures are an away game against Sierra Leone and a home game against Sao Tome and Principe. Avoiding defeat in both games would likely secure their qualification for the next edition of the AFCON.
