OGC Nice's Terem Moffi set to replace injured Victor Boniface in Nigeria's AFCON squad

  • In a setback for the Super Eagles, Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to a muscle injury sustained in training in Abu Dhabi.
  • OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi has been invited to replace Boniface, with his nomination pending approval from CAF and consent from his club.

Moffi, initially left out of Jose Peseiro's final 25-man squad, is set to step in for Boniface, who was tipped to excel at the AFCON after smashing 16 goals and eight assists in 23 appearances for Leverkusen.

Boniface's absence was notable in Nigeria's preparatory matches, where they secured a 12-0 victory over a local Abu Dhabi club but suffered a subsequent 2-0 loss to Guinea.

Moffi's potential inclusion comes after he made a swift return from injury, impressing with impactful performances for OGC Nice.

Despite missing the initial squad selection, Moffi boasts four goals in 12 international appearances for Nigeria, including a significant strike in a 3-2 friendly against Mozambique.

Moffi's statistics in Ligue 1 include six goals and two assists in 16 appearances.
