Serie A: Osimhen equals Maradona's feat in Sassuolo demolition job

  • Victor Osimhen netted a superb hat-trick and added an assist to lift Napoli to an excellent 6-1 victory over Sassuolo.
  • Napoli and Sassuolo were struggling for positive results before the encounter, with the two teams failing to record a win in each of their last four games in all competitions.

On Wednesday evening, it was Sassuolo that drew first blood before Amir Rrahmani equalised for Napoli just before the hour-mark

Shortly after, the Osimhen show began.

The Nigerian forward made it 2-1 in the 31st minute, grabbed his brace ten minutes later, and completed his hat-trick moments into the second half.

The Super Eagles striker was then credited with the assist for Kvaratskhelia's goal to make it 5-1 before the Georgian playmaker completed the rout.

Osimhen now has 11 league goals this season to become only the third player in Napoli's history to score at least ten goals in 4 consecutive seasons in Serie A, after Diego Armando Maradona and Attila Sallustro.

In his first season in Italy, Osimhen managed ten goals in 24 league appearances and raised it to 14 goals in 27 games the following year.

Osimhen, however, took his scoring to a new level last season as he smashed 26 goals in 32 Serie A matches to propel Napoli to a first Scudetto title in 33 years.

The 25-year-old finished as the Serie A top goalscorer, becoming the first African footballer to win the award.
