Afeez Aremu excited by the opportunity to play in Germany

Every young footballer in Nigeria dreams of playing in Europe, and Afeez Aremu was no different. Born and raised in Ibadan into a footballing family, he worked towards becoming the best player he could be. The former Awka United midfielder joined Norwegian side IK Start in 2018, and has experienced success in his two seasons in Europe so far.

The 20-year old midfielder helped the club regain promotion to the Norwegian top-flight and his impressive performances earned him a recent transfer to FC St. Pauli in the German 2. Bundesliga.

EaglesTracker spoke briefly with Aremu to get his thoughts on the transfer, and preview the upcoming 2020/2021 season.

AFEEZ AREMU INTERVIEW

Q: Congratulations on your move to FC St. Pauli Afeez, how excited are you to be moving to Germany ?

A: I'm so excited to move to Germany because it's what I've been dreaming and working towards. I'm so happy that I earned it.

Q: What prompted your decision to leave IK Start after two seasons with the club ?

A: Well, I had a two wonderful seasons at IK Start. I met the good people of the city, my teammates, coaching staff and also the fans. Every footballer wants to take a good step in their career and I think this is a good step for mine. That’s why I didn’t take too much time to decide on joining FC St. Pauli.

Afeez has already hit the ground running since joining St Pauli, featuring in two friendly matches as the side prepare for their season opener on Sunday, when they take on SV Elvsberg in the DFB Pokal.

THE FUTURE

Afeez suggests that he is trying not to set any expectations for himself, and will rather take things one game at a time as he begins his new adventure.

Q: What can we expect from you in the upcoming season with FC St Pauli ?

A: I can’t say much now, but I'm waiting for the season to kick start and I will give everything for my team and the amazing fans. After the season, we will see what we have achieved.

Q: Where do you see yourself and your football career in the next five years ?

A: I don’t really know, but right now I am in Central Europe. I can say that the next step I am dreaming of for now, is to play in 1. Bundesliga, the English Premier league, Spanish La Liga or a big club in Belgium.
