Victor Boniface: Is Nigeria's newest striking sensation ready for Super Eagles call-up?

  • The exciting youngster has already registered nineteen goals and six assists in all competitions this season

The Nigeria national men's football team is set to take on Costa Rica and Portugal in back-to-back international friendlies in November.

Head coach Jose Peseiro may be unable to call on the duo of Lorient forward Terem Moffi and Cremonese ace Cyriel Dessers.

While Moffi is recovering from a knock he sustained last week, Dessers only picked up his injury at the weekend in Cremonese's 0-0 draw with Udinese.

The Super Eagles boast ample alternative striking options in Napoli's Victor Osimhen and KRC Genk's Paul Onuachu.

However, another excellent Nigerian star has been painting Europe red with goals, and it could be the perfect time for the national team handlers to look in his direction.

The player? Victor Boniface!

Only 21, Boniface has been one of Nigeria's most prolific forwards in the European circuit this season.

The youngster smashed in six goals in Norway's Eliteserien and added another five in just four Champions League qualifying games for Bodoe/Glimt.

Surprisingly, the Norwegian club allowed Boniface to join Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise for only €2 million during the summer.

Boniface is increasingly looking like a bargain buy for the ambitious Belgian outfit.
The Real Sapphire academy product has kicked off in Belgium, where he left off in Norway.

Boniface has already contributed three goals and two assists in 12 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League to help lowly Union SG climb to fourth on the table ahead of traditional big teams like Standard Liege and Anderlecht.

It is, however, in the Europa League that Boniface's impact has been felt more.

The Nigerian attacker has managed three goals and one assist to help Union SG stay unbeaten in Group D and qualify for the next round with a game to spare.

With his three goals, Boniface is the most prolific Nigerian player in the Europa League. Only Braga's Vítor Oliveira (4 goals) has scored more than the youngster.

While Victor Osimhen, Terem Moffi, and Cyriel Dessers will continue to attract Jose Peseiro's interest and attention when fit, it is only fair that talented youngsters are given a chance to show what they have got when the regulars are not available.

And no young Nigerian striker has excelled in Europe more than Boniface.

In the absence of Dessers, Boniface may get that maiden Super Eagles call up his outstanding performances so merit.
