FIFA U20 World Cup: Nigeria secure historic victory over Argentina

  • Nigeria's Flying Eagles soared to a momentous 2-0 triumph over hosts Argentina, securing their place in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Inside the capacity Estadio San Juan on Wednesday night, the match began with the Javier Mascherano-led Argentinian side dominating possession and dictating the tempo during the first half.

However, the Flying Eagles remained composed, frustrating their opponents while maintaining a clear attacking intent. The opening 45 minutes ended with neither side managing to find the back of the net.

Shortly after the break, Nigeria's head coach, Ladan Bosso introduced Emmanuel Umeh and Haliru Sarki.

These changes injected new life into the Nigerian attack, immediately posing a potent threat.

In a moment of brilliance, Nnadi's thunderous strike rattled the crossbar, narrowly denying Nigeria the lead.

The hour mark brought a stunning turn of events as Ibrahim Muhammad broke the deadlock, sending shockwaves through the San Juan Stadium. Umeh's deftly lofted pass allowed Muhammad to infiltrate the box and calmly dispatch the ball past the outstretched goalkeeper, triggering jubilation among the Nigerian contingent.

Argentina, determined to respond swiftly, launched a series of attacks. However, Nigeria's resolute defense, marshaled expertly by Benjamin Fredrick, Abel Ogwuche, and Daniel Daga, thwarted their every advance.

Umeh, instrumental in the first goal, came agonizingly close to netting a second, but his effort veered wide during a swift counterattack.

As the match reached its climax, Argentina intensified their assault, striking the woodwork and having a chance cleared off the line, leaving the crowd breathless.

However, it was the Flying Eagles who would have the final say.

AC Milan youngster Victor Eletu showcased his skills by overpowering an Argentine defender and delivering a tantalizing cross. Haliru Sarki rose above his marker, heading home with precision to secure Nigeria's victory and propel the team into the coveted quarterfinals.

In the quarters, the Flying Eagles will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Ecuador and South Korea.
