Official: Jose Peseiro leaves role as Super Eagles head coach

  • Jose Peseiro has announced the end of his tenure as the head coach of the Nigerian men's national football team.
  • Peseiro's contract with the Nigeria Football Federation expired on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

The Portuguese tactician has decided against extending his contract, ending his 22-month spell in charge of the Super Eagles.

In a statement posted on his official social media channels, Peseiro expressed his pride in coaching the three-time African champions.

The former Sporting Lisbon and Porto manager also appreciated the Nigerian football community.

"Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfillment," the statement read in part.

NFF hired Peseiro in May 2022 after Nigeria failed to qualify for that year's FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 63-year-old coach guided the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

At the tournament proper, played between January and February, Peseiro inspired Nigeria to reach the final after an impressive unbeaten run of six matches.

However, in the title decider, the Super Eagles fell to a 2-1 defeat to hosts Cote d'Ivoire to settle for a silver medal finish.

The NFF has not announced Peseiro's replacement at the time of this report.
