2023 AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles to play Guinea-Bissau in Morocco

  • After winning their first two qualifying games in the series, Nigeria will secure their spot at the next continental championship with victories in their matches in March

North African giants, Morocco have agreed to host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations matchday four qualifying fixture between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria on March 27.

Nigeria are Group A leaders with six points after winning their first two qualifying games against Sierra Leone and São Tomé e Príncipe.

Goals from Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen helped the Super Eagles' earn a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Leone Stars on June 9 at the Abuja National Stadium.

Four days later, the three-time African champions crushed lowly São Tomé e Príncipe at the Stade d'Agadir, Morocco, in a record 10-0 win inspired by four goals from Napoli ace, Osimhen.

Nigeria next play host to Guinea-Bissau at the Abuja National Stadium on March 20 before trading tackles with the same West African neighbours seven days later.

It was expected that the match will be played at the country's national stadium, the 20,000-capacity Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

But Morocco on Thursday (February 9) released a statement approving Guinea-Bissau's proposal to play the crucial qualifier in one of the top facilities in the North African country.

Morocco have made available six stadia from which Guinea-Bissau will make their choice. The stadiums include Casablanca’s Mohammed V Complex (45,000 seats), Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Complex (53,000), Grand Stade de Marrakech (45,240), Agadir’s Stade Adrar (45,480), Grand Stade de Tanger (45,000), and Grand Stade de Fez (37,000).

The Super Eagles will seal a spot at Ivory Coast 2023 should they beat Guinea-Bissau in Abuja and Morocco. The tournament proper holds between January and February 2024.
