Finidi George resigns as Nigeria's Super Eagles coach

• Finidi George has stepped down as the head coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles, the senior men's national football team.

The resignation of George, who was appointed as the head coach in April 2024, was confirmed by the team's media officer, Promise Efoghe.

George previously served as the assistant coach under Jose Peseiro for 20 months before taking on the head coach role himself.

In March, he served as the interim coach, securing a [2-1] victory over Ghana, and suffering a [2-0] defeat against Mali in international friendlies.

As the permanent coach, George led the team in two FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying matches in June, resulting in a [1-1] draw with South Africa and a [2-1] loss to Benin Republic. These results have jeopardized Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the next World Cup, as Nigeria sits fifth in Group C, with three points from four games, four points behind group-leading Rwanda.

His resignation comes amid a statement from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about their intent to hire an "expatriate technical adviser" to support him due to the poor results in the World Cup qualifiers.

Finidi George, a former Nigerian international and a member of the Super Eagles' AFCON 1994 winning squad, leaves his role, after less than two months on the job .

The NFF is now under pressure to find a replacement quickly to lead the team in upcoming fixtures.
