UCL Round-Up: Osimhen on target, Onyedika makes history with Club Brugge

  • There were mixed fortunes in stock for Nigerian footballers on matchday four of the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League season.

In Group A, Victor Osimhen returned from his injury layoff to power Napoli to a 4-2 win over Ajax Amsterdam inside the Diego Maradona Stadium.

It was Osimhen's first goal for Il Partenopei in the competition since joining the club from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2020.

With the win, Napoli confirm their spot in the next round of the Champions League, having amassed a maximum of 12 points from their four games.

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey featured for Ajax in the encounter, with the former Rangers lad assisting the Dutch team's first goal of the evening.

But with three points from four games, the Eredivisie champions are likelier to drop into the Europa League following Liverpool's convincing 6-1 win at Glasgow Rangers.

In Group B, Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika delivered a solid performance to help ten-man Club Brugge earn a 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid.

The crucial point earned in Spain has sealed Brugge's progress to the round of 16 for the first time in the club's history.

Also in Group B, full-back Zaidu Sanusi saw every minute of action as FC Porto went to Bayer Leverkusen to hand the Germans a 3-0 thrashing.

Sanusi scored his first UCL goal of the season on matchday three.

With back-to-back victories over Bayer, Porto are back to second behind Club Brugge and have their qualification destiny right in their hands.

And in Group C, exciting forward Fortune Bassey failed to make it off the bench as Viktoria Plzen fell to a 4-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich.

With zero points from four games, the Czech Republic champions have been the whipping boys of a group with Barcelona and Inter Milan.

In Group G, Nigerian forward Paul Mukairu was a second-half substitute as FC Copenhagen held English champions Manchester City to a 0-0 draw.

The Danish champions became the first team to pick points off Pep Guardiola's side in Europe's premier club competition this season.

But while Man City have advanced to the knockout phase of the competition, Copenhagen's qualification hopes hang on a thread.

The Danes boast only two points and sit at the base of the group below Man City (10 points), Borussia Dortmund (7 points), and Sevilla (2 points).
