- Villarreal's exciting forward, Samuel Chukwueze, has claimed the 2023 Africa Player of the Season award in the Spanish La Liga. This marks the first time the Super Eagles forward has won this coveted accolade.
Chukwueze emerged as the winner after a voting system that involved more than 30,000 fans and 26 renowned journalists from around the globe, surpassing several other challengers.
The 24-year-old winger surpassed Morocco's goalkeeper Yassine Bono and striker Youssef En-Nesyri, as well as Atletico Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams, among others, to secure this prestigious recognition.
Chukwueze's triumph is attributed to his outstanding performances throughout the season, particularly in the second half when manager Unai Emery left for Aston Villa and new boss Quique Setién provided the Nigerian star with more playing time.
In 37 league matches, Chukwueze showcased his exceptional attacking prowess, contributing six goals and five assists, propelling Villarreal to qualify for a European competition in the upcoming season.
One of his most memorable moments came with a brace against Real Madrid at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium earlier this year, serving as a testament to his skill and further solidifying his credentials.
In total, Chukwueze accumulated an impressive tally of 13 goals and 11 assists across all competitions. This remarkable achievement marks the first time in his career that he reached double figures in both categories in a single campaign.
