Nigeria drop to 39th in July FIFA rankings

• Nigeria drop one spot down to 39th
• The Super Eagles are still number five in Africa

Nigeria's Super Eagles have fallen to 39th in the new FIFA rankings released today, Thursday, July 18th, 2024.

Nigeria last played in June during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles drew against South Africa and lost to Benin for the first time in their history. This resulted in a drop from 30th to 38th place.

In July, while Nigeria did not play, teams in Europe and South America were active in the Copa America and Euro Championships.

Argentina won the Copa America, and Spain claimed the Euro title. Argentina remained at the top of the rankings, while Spain's victory moved them up five places to third in the world, having scored the most points during the period under review.

Due to their inactivity, Nigeria slipped further to 39th. Other African teams also dropped in the rankings because they were not in action. Morocco fell two spots to 14th, Senegal dropped to 19th, and Ivory Coast slipped to 38th.

The top ten teams in the world are Argentina, France, Spain, England, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Colombia, and Portugal.

The top ten teams in Africa are Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, and South Africa.

Nigeria will return to action on the 1st of September when the Super Eagles trade tackles with the Benin Republic in the first qualifier for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
