- African giants Nigeria have secured a spot in the 2024 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup after defeating Liberia [6-1] on aggregate in the final round of qualifiers.
Forward Harmony Chidi was the star of the match, scoring twice to lead Nigeria to a [2-0] victory over Liberia in the second leg of the final playoff.
Last week, Nigeria recorded an excellent [4-1] win against the visitors at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia.
Chidi, Nigeria's top scorer in the campaign, also netted one of the four goals in that first-leg faceoff. She again opened the scoring early in the second leg, finding the net in the third minute at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Nigeria dominated the match, and Chidi added her second goal shortly after the hour mark, sealing Nigeria's qualification for the tournament in the Dominican Republic later this year.
The Flamingos had a strong performance at the last U17 Women's World Cup in India, winning the bronze medal by defeating Germany in the third-place match.
That outing was Nigeria's best in the tournament, following three previous quarterfinal finishes in their five earlier appearances.
