Zimbabwe 1-1 Nigeria: Iheanacho's strike helps Super Eagles to sloppy draw in Rwanda

  • Nigeria recorded another disappointing result in their World Cup qualifying journey as the Super Eagles forced Zimbabwe to a boring 1-1 draw at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda on Sunday afternoon.

If the Super Eagles were poor in their 1-1 draw with Lesotho in Uyo on Thursday, the former African champions were uninspiring in the first half against the Warriors in Butare.

Head coach Jose Peseiro opted to bench Kelechi Iheanacho, arguably Nigeria's best player against Lesotho, and handed starting spots to OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi and debutant Nathan Tella.

What the Portuguese tactician got in return was a Super Eagles side devoid of ambition and ideas in attack.

Zimbabwe were on hand to punish the toothless Eagles, though, as Walter Musona's cracking free-kick sailed past goalkeeper Francis Uzoho into the top corner for the game's opening goal in the 25th minute.

Iheanacho came off the bench at the start of the second half, and twenty minutes later, the Leicester City striker scored Nigeria's equaliser.

Joe Aribo's smart pass found Moses Simon's run in the box, and the Nantes winger laid the ball for Iheanacho to slot into the net.

Both teams had chances to win the game, but none could find the cutting edge in the final third to settle for a share of the spoils.

It is a disappointing start to the World Cup qualification campaign for Nigeria, as the three-time African champions have two points from their first two games.

South Africa lead Group C with three points despite playing and winning just one match, and they could go four points clear of Nigeria should they beat Rwanda on Tuesday.
