  • The Flying Eagles registered their first victory at the 2023 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over hosts and North African giants, Egypt.

The Nigerian lads lost their first match at the tournament to Senegal and were sat at the bottom of Group A ahead of the game against the Egyptians.

Another defeat would have struck a near-fatal blow in the dreams of the Flying Eagles to make it to the semifinals and probably even win the tournament.

And for a long time, it looked like the Young Pharaohs were the better side and the most likely to win following their relentless waves of attack.

While the Flying Eagles' attack continued to look short in quality, the Nigerian defence and goalkeeper, Chijioke Aniagboso, in particular, stood tall to neutralise the hosts' attack.

And midway through the second half, left-back Solomon Agbalaka powered home a superb header from a corner kick to hand the Flying Eagles what turned out to be the winning strike.

With the win, the Flying Eagles climb to second in Group A with three points behind Senegal, who boast six points.

The Young Lions of Teranga defeated Mozambique 3-0 in the other group game to make it two wins out of two.

Nigeria will advance to the competition's quarterfinals with a positive result against the Mozambicans on matchday three.
