  • Randy Waldrum resigns as Super Falcons head coach due to personal reasons, citing his wife's health issues.
  • Waldrum's tenure with Nigeria's women's national team was marked by mixed results, including a round of 16 finish at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

American coach, Randy Waldrum has submitted his resignation as the head coach of Nigeria's Super Falcons, citing personal reasons.

Waldrum's decision comes on the heels of a mixed tenure, marked by highs and lows, and a recent group-stage exit at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Waldrum took the reins in 2020, succeeding Thomas Dennerby, and initially struggled to find his footing.

After defeating Ghana and Ivory Coast to qualify, a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations raised eyebrows among Nigerian fans and media, but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) retained his services.

The American coach eventually found his stride, leading the Super Falcons to an impressive round of 16 finish at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. It was the first time the Super Falcons will finish a World Cup group stage unbeaten, and they were only narrowly defeated by eventual finalists, England, on penalties.

However, Waldrum's personal life has taken a toll, as his wife battles health issues. In a heartfelt letter, Waldrum revealed his decision to step down, prioritizing his family's well-being above all else.

“It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that."

"After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons.

"This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.” He stated.
