WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons to continue dominance over Morocco ?

Toyosi Afolayan

The 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations semifinal matchup between Nigeria and Morocco is an heated one with the hosts standing in the way of the Super Falcons for a spot in the final.

The Super Falcons enter this match motivated by their recent 1-0 victory over Cameroon, which secured their qualification to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

As they continue their quest for a tenth WAFCON title, another victory for the Waldrum led side will book their spot in the final.

Head-to-Head

The Super Falcons and the Atlas Lionesses have met twice in their history. Nigeria inflicted Morocco with her biggest loss at WAFCON, in 1998 when they lost 8-0. In the other meeting, they lost 6-0 (2000).

Match Preview

The Nigerians are unbeaten in their last three games and have not conceded since their opening day 2-1 loss to the Banyana Banyana of South Africa. They've scored eight goals in four games, an average of two per game.

Hosts, Morocco have won all four games they've played, scoring seven goals and conceding two in the process. Most of their goals have come from set pieces and that’s an area Nigeria need to be vigilant.

PREDICTION

Nigeria would be the slight favourites to defeat the Atlas Lionesses due to their unparalleled history and fierce onslaught.

However, the Moroccans are in a blistering form that has seen them win nine out of their last eleven matches and would need to punch way above their weights to advance to the final.

We are favouring a 2-0 victory for Nigeria.
