October FIFA World Rankings: Super Eagles suffer drop after Algeria defeat

  • Super Eagles have moved down a spot, from 31st to 32nd in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings for October 2022z

Concacaf campaigners, Costa Rica accumulated more points than Nigeria during the month under review and moved ahead of the three-time African champions on the ranking table.

The Super Eagles' fall can be associated with the team's recent defeat.

Head coach, Jose Peseiro's men lost 2-1 to Algeria in Oran in an international friendly match played on September 27. A few days earlier, the team only managed a 2-2 draw against a home-based Algerian side in a test game. FIFA did not recognise the test match, though.

Despite the drop on the global scale, the Super Eagles, however, remain the fourth-best national team in Africa.

There is no change to the continent's top five sides, with Senegal retaining their top spot (18th in the world), followed by Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria, and Algeria. Nigeria and Algeria will not be at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Qatar in November.

Brazil are still the best-ranked team in the world, with a 25-point advantage over second-place Belgium.

Lionel Messi's Argentina come in third place, while France and England complete the world's top five.

The Super Eagles will get the chance to boost their world rankings when they lock horns with Portugal next month.

The 2013 AFCON champions are slated to meet the former European champions on November 17 at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon.
