Lookman fires Atalanta to Europa League final to face Boniface's Bayer Leverkusen
Raba
- Ademola Lookman delivered a man-of-the-match display to inspire Atalanta BC to the final of the UEFA Europa League.
The Nigerian forward scored the first and assisted the second as Atalanta sealed a [3-0] victory over Marseille in the second leg of their semifinal clash on Thursday evening.
After forcing a [1-1] draw in France last week, Atalanta advanced to the final of a European competition for the first time in their history with a [4-1] aggregate win.
In the final, Atalanta will face German champions, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who secured a thrilling [2-2] home draw against AS Roma in the second leg in the other semifinal tie.
Bayer Leverkusen came away with an impressive [2-0] win from their trip to Roma last week in the first leg.
However, the Germans threw all that good work into the bin in the opening hour inside the BayArena, allowing the visitors to lead two-nil courtesy of a brace of Leandro Paredes penalties.
Xabi Alonso's men don't know the taste of defeat, though, and they scored two late goals to force a thrilling draw and secure a [4-2] on aggregate.
Nathan Tella and Victor Boniface did not feature at all in the encounter.
With the draw, Bayer Leverkusen set a new European record of 49 games unbeaten in all competitions, overshadowing Benfica's 48-match run.
