Match Report: Benin 2-1 Nigeria - 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier
Raba
- Nigeria's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took another hit following a shock 2-1 loss to Benin at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan on Monday evening.
The Super Eagles started strong, controlling possession and creating chances. Ademola Lookman came close to scoring midway through the first half but missed the target.
Nigeria, however, took the lead in the 27th minute. Samuel Chukwueze received a long pass, cut inside, and set up Raphael Onyedika, who scored with a precise shot.
However, the lead was short-lived. Jodel Dossou equalized for Benin in the 37th minute after Nigeria’s defence faltered. Just before halftime, Steve Mounie capitalized on more poor defending to put Benin ahead.
This marked the first time Nigeria's senior team conceded twice in an international match against Benin.
In the second half, coach Finidi George made several substitutions, including Victor Boniface and Paul Onuachu, but Nigeria couldn't find an equalizer. This defeat was their first against Benin in 47 years.
Nigeria remain fifth in Group C with three points from four matches, while Benin moves to the top with seven points from four games.
