Nigerian-American striker, Ifeoma Onumonu has joined Montpellier HSC's women's team, becoming the first Nigerian player in the club's history. The 30-year-old forward brings a wealth of experience to the young attacking line of the Arkema Première Ligue squad.
Born in California to Nigerian parents, Onumonu has spent her entire career in the United States, playing in the university championship and professional league.
She has also represented Team USA at the U23 level before opting for Nigerian sports nationality, earning 21 caps for the Super Falcons.
Reacting to the move via the Club's official website, the California Golden Bears Alumni expressed her excitement about the new challenge: "I'm eager to discover European football and adapt to my new environment. I needed a change, and this opportunity in Montpellier was perfect."
President Laurent Nicollin welcomed Onumonu, saying: "We're delighted to have her strengthen our attack. We hope she'll adapt quickly and bring a lot to the team."
The forward departed from Utah Royals FC after mutually agreeing to terminate her contract with the National Women's Soccer League side, finding game time hard to come by, appearing just five times in the past season.
The former NY/NJ Gotham striker has featured for Nigeria at the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
