Nigeria's Super Falcons make pre-World Cup statement with victory over Haiti
Cuota
- In a thrilling encounter at the Emirhan Sport Center Stadium, Nigeria's Super Falcons soared to a 2-1 win over Haiti in a pre-World Cup friendly.
The Nigerians dominated the early proceedings and had all the chances in the first half but struggled to make them count on the scoreboard.
Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala, playing her first game for Nigeria since July, was the standout player for the Falcons. She had a goal ruled out for offside before Esther Okoronkwo gave Nigeria the lead with a superbly taken free kick.
In the second half, Nigeria doubled their advantage with Oshoala on target, this time with a well-placed finish after Jennifer Echegini's header had come off the crossbar. Haiti pulled one back following a defensive mix-up, but the Nigerian defense held firm to secure a 2-1 victory.
It was a positive return for Oshoala, who was Nigeria's most dangerous attacker throughout the game. She came close to adding to her tally several times but was denied by some brilliant saves from the Haitian goalkeeper.
The victory was Nigeria's second in a row, following their triumph over Costa Rica in February, as they continue their preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The Super Falcons will next face World Cup co-hosts New Zealand on Tuesday in another pre-tournament friendly.
