Through a statement on their official website, FC Augsburg have announced the signing of Nigerian international Frank Onyeka on a season-long loan from Brentford FC. The 25-year-old central midfielder brings a wealth of experience, having featured in the Premier League and Champions League, as well as earning 25 caps for Nigeria.
Onyeka's reunion with FC Augsburg head coach Jess Thorup is a significant factor in the move, having previously worked together at FC Midtjylland from 2017 to 2021. Thorup's familiarity with Onyeka's abilities and work ethic makes this transfer a strategic coup for the German club.
Sporting director Marinko Jurendic expressed delight at securing Onyeka's services, highlighting his international experience, athleticism, and physicality as valuable assets to the team. Onyeka himself is eager to establish himself at FC Augsburg, aiming to play regularly and contribute to a successful season.
The Nigerian midfielder will initially be absent due to international commitments, representing his country in AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda. Upon his return, he will join his new teammates in Augsburg, ready to integrate into the squad and make his mark in the German top flight.
The FC Ebedei Alumni, was a key member for the the Super Eagles in their run to the final of the 2023 AFCON early this year, as they fell short of the trophy courtesy of a 2-1 loss to hosts Ivory Coast.
