The Nigerian U20 Women's National Team, the Falconets, have embarked on a thrilling adventure to Colombia, seeking to conquer the global stage at the upcoming FIFA U20 Women's World Cup. The team arrived in Bogota on Sunday, August 20, for a two-week intensive training camp, carefully designed to prepare them for the tournament's demands.
Led by the experienced Coach Christopher Musa Danjuma, the Falconets have been working tirelessly to fine-tune their skills, build team cohesion, and perfect their strategy for the World Cup. The team's journey to Colombia marks a significant milestone in their preparation, following a successful four-week first-phase camping program in Abuja.
During their stay in Bogota, the Falconets will engage in a series of friendly matches and training sessions, tailored to test their mettle against top-notch opposition. The team's technical crew has meticulously planned the camp's itinerary to ensure that the players are adequately prepared for the challenges ahead.
The Falconets' participation in the World Cup is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Having secured one of Africa's tickets to the tournament after aggregate-score defeats of Tanzania and Burundi, the team is determined to make a lasting impact on the global stage.
Speaking to the NFF Media, Sports Minister John Owan Enoh, who met with the squad on Friday, charged them to go for the ultimate prize, having won silver medals previously and reaching the semi-finals once. His words of encouragement have further motivated the team to strive for excellence.
The Falconets have been drawn to play Korea Republic, Germany, and Venezuela in the group phase, and they know that they must start fighting hard from the first blast of the whistle to have any chance of making the Round of 16. With the field expanded to 24 teams for the first time, Africa now has four flag-bearers - Nigeria, Morocco, Cameroon, and Ghana.
The team's first match against Korea Republic holds on September 1 at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, followed by their match against Germany on September 4 at the same venue. Their final match of the group phase is against Venezuela on September 7 at the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali.
